The 4 Best Places to See Red Wing, MN, Fall Colors
1. Barn Bluff
Barn Bluff is known for its great views of the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin. The ridge is also one of the top places for hiking in Red Wing. When you arrive at the bluff, take one of the hiking trails and start the 340-foot climb to the top. You’ll marvel at the gorgeous landscape below you, spread out as far as the eye can see.
2. Frontenac State Park
If you’re in the mood for an outdoor adventure while you take in the scenery, head to Frontenac State Park. This 2,270-acre state park is just a 15-minute drive from your room at the St. James. Take a ride on one of the bike trails, have a picnic atop the bluffs, and snap a few photos of the fiery fall foliage.
3. Mississippi River Valley Drive
Another fantastic way to see the fall colors is by taking a drive in Southern Minnesota Bluff Country. Hop in the car and take a day trip through the Mississippi River Valley. We recommend following U.S. Route 61 between Red Wing and La Crescent, a drive that typically takes a little over an hour and a half. Stop at the many scenic overlooks and farm stands along the way to get a true taste of the season.
When to See the Fall Colors
The Minnesota DNR reports that fall colors are typically at their best in Red Wing from late September to mid-October. In September, the leaves start to turn yellow and orange. By October, the leaves are deep red and purple. After especially warm and humid summers, the foliage is at its most vibrant and picturesque.
